Film Project Genre Research - Five Feet Apart

The opening of Five Feet Apart was very intriguing. The main character, Stella, introduces herself through a vlog situation on the computer, which uses many close-ups. It starts off with Stella talking to the camera using direct address. Cutting was used to transfer from Stella talking to cleaning her room. A fair amount of dialogue was used by Stella to introduce the setting and plot. The production design of the hospital showed the audience the setting of
the story that is about to happen. This sets the heavy, emotional mood as she talks about 'human touch'. An establishing shot was used to establish the hospital living situation. The opening scene includes Stella talking to the camera about not being able to have human touch. This clip belongs at the end but the producers put it at the front to walk the audience through the story. She continues to show the audience what her life is like living with Cystic Fibrosis. This is all through direct address. The direct address gives the audience an idea of what Stella does in her free time as she is living in a hospital and does not have much to do. In the first couple seconds, Lionsgate and CBS Films are recognized through credits, emphasizing the big companies and who own the movie. The movie's budget was $7 Million and grossed a worldwide total of $80.1 Million. In 2019, Five Feet Apart was nominated for Best Romance at the Golden Trailer. Also, the movie was nominated at The People's Choice Awards for Favorite Drama Movie. Overall, the opening on Five Feet Apart used many establishing shots to give the audience a good background of Stella and Cystic Fibrosis. This sets an awesome foundation for the rest of the movie to build on.
